The U.S. Department of Energy has published the summary report from its 2008 DOE Solid State Lighting (SSL) Market Introduction Workshop, which was held July 9?11 in Portland, Ore. The workshop was attended by more than 270 participants from the lighting industry, efficiency programs, utilities, and lighting design firms. Energy Star, a joint venture of DOE and the Environmental Protection Agency, has released the summary of comments for the Energy Star Residential Light Fixture specification (V4.2), proposed next steps, recent test results, and other program updates. The EPA has set October 20, 2008, as the comment/review period deadline date. A PDF of the RLF V4.2 summary is available here.

Energy Star also announced a step forward in the status of LM-80, a test procedure for the Energy Star SSL program. The Illuminating Engineering Society's (IES) committee that developed LM-80 voted to move the initiative to the IES board of directors for final approval. LM-80 will measure lumen maintenance of SSL products. Energy Star anticipates the decision being made in advance of September 30, 2008, the effective date for the Energy Star SSL criteria.
