Beginning Jan. 1, 2013, Derek Porter Studio (DPS) ( is transitioning its office and design practice from Kansas City, Mo., to New York City. According to firm principal Derek Porter, the move serves as a way for DPS “to test and explore new territories in lighting design” such as product design and new collaborative relationships. To that end, DPS will be working with New York City-based lighting firm Lumen Architecture on selected future projects. The move also facilitates a better travel schedule for Porter as he continues his commitment to lighting education as Director of the Master of Fine Arts Lighting Design Program in the School of Constructed Environments at Parsons the New School of Design. The transition will take several months as existing projects are completed.
