Chihuly Lobby Installation, Macau

The MGM Grand Macau lobby features two Chihuly pieces: the red “Fiori Di Paradiso Ceiling” glass installation, measuring 55 feet long and 30 feet wide, and the “Fiori Di Paradiso Drawing Wall.” Located behind the reception desk, the drawing wall features 45 different glass panels and is 55 feet long and 15 feet high. With each piece having its own unique qualities, each installation also received its own lighting design solution. More

NBBJ Opens Lighting Design Studio

In response to increasing demand for lighting services and its own internal growth, Seattle architecture firm NBBJ has separated its lighting group from the architecture and interior design studio, from which it operated for seven years, and created a new studio dedicated to lighting design. The lighting design studio consolidates the firm's eight lighting designers into one place, and according to studio head Melanie Taylor, will elevate the focus of lighting to a higher level at the firm and give the group greater autonomy as a practice. Also, Kate Borgner has joined the lighting design team as a daylighting specialist. Based out of NBBJ's Seattle office, the lighting studio will work on projects around the globe. More

Climate Protection Council Formed

The U.S. Conference of Mayors has recently formed the Climate Protection Council, aimed at bringing together business leaders and mayors to address climate change issues and discuss solutions for making cities more sustainable. The council was formed at the two-day Mayors Climate Protection Summit in Seattle Nov. 1-2, 2007. Aurora, Ohio-based lighting manufacturer TCP Inc. sponsored the summit and joins seven other charter members: Johnson Controls, The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, American Chemistry Council, DuPont, WalMart Stores, and Waste Management. This was both the challenge and inspiration for Seattle-based lighting firm Studio Lux in its design for Barrier Motors' Mercedes Benz dealership. 'What we wanted to achieve was not just a great lighting design for this showroom,' explains founder and firm principal Christopher Thompson.
