COMPETITION: IALD International Lighting Design Awards
The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) announces its 26th Annual IALD International Lighting Design Awards competition, honoring lighting design that "reaches new heights, moves beyond the ordinary, and represents excellence in aesthetic and technical design achievement." Judging categories include academic/institutional, corporate, hospitality, monumental structures/public spaces, residential, retail/entertainment, site/facade, and sustainable design. COMPETITION: IES International Illumination Design Awards
The International Illumination Design Awards (IIDA) program is open to any qualified entrant with no limitations in terms of professional affiliations. Judging of submissions is broken up into rating the problem, concept, and solution and is based on how well the lighting design does or does not meet the program criteria. The submission must have been completed within 24 months of the due date. Levels of awards include certificate of participation, section award, award of merit, special citation, award of excellence, and award of distinction. Also, the Guth, Waterbury, Cutler, and the Energy and Environmental Design Award are parallel programs that recognize outstanding lighting design.

COMPETITION: Lumen Awards
Conceived in 1968 by the New York section of the Illuminating Engineering Society, the Lumen Awards program publicly recognizes professionalism, excellence, and originality in lighting design. The highest level of recognition is the Lumen Award of Excellence, followed by the Lumen Award of Merit, Lumen Citation, and Lumen Feltman Award. Winning Lumen entries go on to be included in the regional International Illumination Design Awards program.

COMPETITION: GE Edison Awards
The GE Edison Awards, given annually, recognize the work of lighting professionals who have used a significant number of GE light sources (lamps and/or LEDs) in a project completed during the calendar year 2008. Judging criteria includes: functional excellence; architectural compatibility; effective use of state-of-the-art lighting products and techniques; appropriate color, form, and texture revelation; energy effectiveness and cost effectiveness. Awards of Merit and Awards of Excellence are given to those projects with the highest number of points. Projects that minimize the use of energy while providing high-quality light receive Awards for Sustainable Design, while an Award for Residential Design is given to the project excelling in a residential application.

COMPETITION: Cooper Lighting SOURCE Awards
Cooper Lighting is now accepting entries for its 32nd Annual SOURCE Awards lighting design competition, which focuses on furthering the understanding, knowledge, and function of lighting as a primary design element. The competition is open to all lighting designers, architects, engineers, professional designers, and consultants who use Cooper Lighting fixtures in an interior or exterior design project, as well as students currently enrolled in these disciplines. Judging will take place in January 2009.

IALD Education Trust Scholarship and Student Stipend Programs

"The IALD Education Trust is pleased to announce the Thomas M. Lemons Scholarship (TMLS) established through the lighting design firm Available Light. The winning recipient of the TMLS will be awarded $4,000 to assist with expenses such as tuition, room and board, and books.
